In my attempt to get back into doing DIY I decided my first project would be making my son a loft bed….a very lofty (😉) goal it has turned out to be. I’m going to take you along for the ride to share my success and failures and everything I have learned. So lets get right to it. This is the space we started with.

I first located and marked the studs on the walls then used 2×6 boards from Lowes to make the frame. I had my husband help me with this part because holding the boards level and drilling into the studs was challenging by myself. I wanted to make sure they were secure AF so I did some research on what fasteners to use and came up with Spax Powerlags. They are building code recognized, they have a built in washer and do not require any pre-drilling. They were huge and looked very heavy duty so I knew they would do the job. I used a 4×4 as a support post and just like that the frame was done.

It was here that I realized my first mistake.

Mistake #1
I needed to attach the end board to the inside of the board attached to the wall. My drill wouldn’t fit in the space between the board and the window frame so I couldn’t get the screws out.

The Solution
I bought this Dewalt Right Angle attachment for my drill to remove the screws.

The Fix
I then used this Simpson Strong-Tie 2″x4″ ZMAX medium L Angle and SD Connector 1.5″ screws to attach the two boards.
Keep following along and I’ll tell you about mistake #2 !!
